What happens after you are qualified?

You might have just signed up for a new course or be nearing the end of one as you think to yourself ‘What am I going to do once I am qualified?’. The beauty and holistic industry is MASSIVE with many opportunities so it can be dauting to know what you want to do next. Ask yourself what you’ve really enjoyed most about your course, do you plan to do some more and what will most suit your lifestyle. Here are some ideas for you to consider:

Self-employment

Self employed therapist

Working for yourself can be either mobile or from your own home/salon/shed/garage. By working for yourself, you are in charge of, and responsible for everything! Your earning potential is uncapped because the more you work, the more you can earn as you are not just salaried. This is great for someone who is extremely driven and wants to work on their own with little or no support from other team members.

Employed in a beauty salon

Working in a beauty salon

This is a great way to build up a clientele base and become confident in all salon treatments such as nails, facials, waxing etc. In a salon, you are likely to have regular clients along with others who don’t mind who they have their treatment with. You don’t need to worry about finding your own clients as typically the salon will advertise for you, but there will be pressure to get your clients rebooked after each visit. A lot of salons will provide further training and development and there may be opportunities to progress to a senior therapist role, or the salon manager. Being employed, you will receive a salary but commission on treatment and product sales can boost your earnings.

Employed in a spa

Working in a spa

Spas typically offer fantastic training from reputable product brands and extensive training in spa treatments such as body wraps, body scrubs, facial techniques etc. Spas are typically located in hospitality settings including hotels and it can be nice to be a part of a big team not only in the spa but the hotel too. Opportunities to progress to senior therapist, spa manager and also cross train in other departments can be available and easier with the team being bigger. Spas can be very busy so expect to be fully booked most of the time and often without commisssion as guests might be dressed in bath robes and not have easy access to their purses. You will find the most popular treatments are massage, facials and body treatments making working in a spa perfect if you prefer a more relaxing environment.

Cruise ships

Cruise ship

Ever wanted to travel the world? Many beauty therapists head off each year to work onboard luxury cruise ships and yachts. Not only does this mean you can travel the world, but it is a great way to save some money for the future as you’ll be working long hours with limited opportunities to spend your wages. Expect to work long runs of days without breaks, become very business-minded and ready to smash some sales targets to reap the rewards.

Trainer or sales manager for a product brand

Working for product range

Have you already got some experience in the industry? Why not put that to good use and work for a product brand as a trainer or sales manager. Trainers sometimes get the opportunity to travel around the world to luxury destinations such as the Maldives to educate spa staff, and if you are sales driven and love the idea of having targets, then a sales manager role could be for you.

These are a few of the many opportunities available to you once you qualify. I am very fortunate that I have been in the industry for many years and have a lot of amazing contacts who are always happy to help new students.  So, if you are looking for some advice or to network, do reach out as I am always happy to support my past and present students in any way I can. Whatever, you choose always remember the learning never steps. The industry evolves at a rapid rate and it’s important to keep up to date with what’s happening. You also want to be able to give your client’s the best possible treatment by keeping up to date with the industry.

Enjoy the beginning of your exciting career in the world of beauty.
